I was in a rush. I work from home in a basement office and had wrapped up my work day; but I had some things to do and was scheduled to meet a friend immediately after work. I grabbed my laptop, deposited it on table, and went to the kitchen to fill my water bottle.
As I circled back to my laptop, my 3-and-a-half-year-old nephew blocked my way, his sweet eyes catching mine and he proclaimed… “Kisses”. I take a breath, I had a moment where everything I felt I had to do, the list, ran past my minds eye. Then, instantaneously, another thought took lead, as if it were a race; what message did I want to give my nephew? I’m too busy, or I’ll drop all, for precious moments like this…
I picked him up and then hung him upside down as I kissed the sides of his face while making a ton of kissing noises. Upside down and then upright, back and forth; him continuing to demand kisses and laughing with such wonderful joy and delight.
My heart filled with my own joy; his cute face is still framed in my mind. I want my message, given not just with my words but (more importantly to me) my actions, to leave him feeling loved, always.
