What if you viewed cultivating awareness like the start of a good spring cleaning? One where you commit to just cleaning the dust off, seeing what is in all the rooms (and closets) of your house, and re-arranging if you feel called to. See what you have surrounding you.
As you clean, consider; what value does this have to me now, in this moment? Does the tchotchke bring a smile to my face? If so, does it need to be moved so you see it and feel the joy from it more often? Or did you find a whole pile of grocery lists and receipts from 2 years ago? Do you throw them out? Do you file them?
When we cultivate our inner awareness, we are essentially cleaning the houses of our minds. Discovering what we have collected; thoughts, emotions, resistance, fears, joys, attachments, expectations, judgments. As we become familiar with each object we are cleaning off in our minds, the same exercise can be applied. Does it bring value and what type of value? Take notice of what it offers and how your emotional system reacts to it. Start slowly… gently and as your awareness grows, the urge to release things will come up. Let them go.
With each item that no longer serves you, you are becoming freer, lighter. You are no longer carrying everything you’ve collected in your life with you… Instead you are choosing what has value and place in your life now, giving you freedom, and empowering you to live a life that you want.
