There is just something about hiking that calls to me. The quietness of nature or the voracious welcoming (as I like to think of it as) of animal cries as you enter their territory. The happenstance encounter; bear, coyote, moose, bunny, baby mountain lion, another human on trail, and nameless other beautiful creatures. The one step in front of the other, breath, step, and content-ness that the reward is the amazing view. The feeling of being just a blip in this universe, tucked away like an ant in the wilderness, just another part of the ecosystem, and a feeling of inter-connected with all.
I prefer longer, 10-16 miles, day hikes. Alone, with others, or meeting a fellow hiker on traill and uniting in our combined goal of experiencing a beautiful time. There is so much I love about hiking. I love the peaceful place I retreat to in my mind, and if my mind is not clear in the beginning, it becomes clear by the end. I love nature; the trees, the animals, the plants, the rocks, all terrain… maybe not so much mosquitos or horse flies but that’s okay, they all have their place. I love the clean air. I love the aw feeling I get when reaching a summit. Looking out over the expansive of wilderness in front of me, humbling me. I love feeling powerful in my body, capable of every step, mile after mile, step after step, drop of sweat after drop of sweat. I love the feeling of satisfaction as I return to my start point, muscles tired but happy. I love the feeling of openness, connection to myself and to nature.
