I spied her while I was hiding under the bed, hiding because this place was totally new to me. New place, new smells, new humans, and well… being under the bed in the dark, cramped space made me feel comfortable. Then they came in. What felt like a crowd of people and her. There were more rooms in the house, but the crowd decided to hang out right in front of my spot. ugh… really? Collectively gathered in chairs and making noise.
Not her, she too was on the floor, curled into herself and leaning against the door. Trying to be invisible. After minutes, I couldn’t help myself. I was too curious. Her black furry form so much like my own. Her fear, palpable in the air, made me feel brave. I could relate to her fear. She was new too it seemed.
I slithered from under the bed and stalked toward her. The humans may have stopped talking, and she, she tracked my movement with her eyes. As I got closer, she turned her body to face the door, trying to ignore my progress toward her. The humans got quiet, just watching. Someone moved, and my fear instinct took over… under the bed I was again.
Oh well… to start again. To brave the open space between me and her. I reached her. She wasn’t like me, but I knew in my kitty heart, that we would be friends. I reached her and gently, tentatively touched a paw to her doggy body. She flinched away. That was okay. I will show her. I gently crawled onto her body and around her; nothing happened. She stayed utterly still. I grew more confident and happier, now rubbing up on her and purring with contentment. New place means new friends and we were going to be the best of friends. Kindred spirits; and so it has been.
