I was lounged across my hotel bed, reading some book and fully engrossed. So much so that I missed the big thud. My best friend didn’t though, she on the other bed staring into her laptop, popped up in concern. What was that?
Under one of the chairs on our small patio was a hummingbird, limp. We fretted. Was he dead? We watched him for a while, I had grabbed a leaf to try to shift him, to keep my human smell away from him. He flopped about… nothing.
Eventually he made it onto my hands, and his little feet grabbed onto my finger, holding on. His eyes still closed, his head and body not yet capable enough to sit up. Yet, he clung to my finger and he was alive. My friend and I held our breaths. Worried, in awe of the little creature. When he was finally sitting straight, eyes open, I shifted him off to a tree branch and let him really get his bearings. We watched as he gathered himself and lifted off, wishing him the best.
I loved my experience helping this little creature. It still gives me zings of joy just thinking about it.
